It is a theory week. I have learned many different theory about management. The functions of management are planing, organizing, controlling and leading. However, it is not easy to summary these functions. There must be a long time for people to finding, practicing and summing up. Here are some essential people who contribute to the develop of management: Frederick Winslow Taylor, Henri Fayol, Max Weber, Lyndall Irwick, Henry Ford, Elton Mayo, and Eric Trist. I am interested in Frederick Winslow Taylor’s scientific management, Henri Fayol’s fundamental management principles and Elton Mayo’s Hawthorne effect.
In terms of Frederick Winslow Taylor’s scientific management. It is aim to improve economic efficiency and labor productivity. Economic efficiency refers to maximize produce goods or services, in other words, decrease waste and try best to good use of resources. labor productivity means employee have to produce products as much as they can in the amount of time or produce a certain amount of products in the shortest possible time. Besides, Taylor advocates choose the people to the suitable position rather than casually find employee because different people have different skills. However, he also think that workers took no responsibility, just need managers to supervise. As far as i have concerned, it is not benefit for efficiency production as workers are the important part of a company, if they are not response for their work then a company can not get huge profit.
As for Henri Fayol’s fundamental management principles, he introduced Division of Labour, Authority and Responsibility, Discipline, Fair Remuneration, Centralisation, Efficiency and Harmony. These things is quite connect to management. Fair wage is vital as it is employee’s right to get fair wage, if they get equal pay then they can have a good attitude when they are working. Different company have different types of disciplines which exist is for better build the company. Centralization can makes small company working efficient and regular.
Elton Mayo’s Hawthorne effect can be seen in Google inc. Teamwork is super important as it can help staff to meet new people and new working place. Besides, employee need to have many kinds of skills in order to suit different work. What’s more, each individual’s performance influence team, this require employee have to try them best to do their work because it not only influence themselves but also connect with group reputation.
Overall, these theories play important roles in modern management. However, exploration will never stop.
